What LTS and STS mean
Umbraco has two kinds of major release. Long-term support (LTS) versions, such as Umbraco 10, 13 and 17, get 24 months of full support (bug and security fixes) and then 12 months of security fixes only: three years in total. Short-term support (STS) versions arrive in between, bring new features earlier, and are supported for about a year.
For a site you want to run for years without constant upgrades, stay on LTS and move from one LTS to the next.
What end of life means for your site
When a version reaches end of life, Umbraco HQ stops releasing security fixes for it. The site keeps working, but:
- Newly found vulnerabilities stay open, on a public website.
- Security audits, penetration tests and cyber-insurance questionnaires flag unsupported software.
- Package authors stop releasing updates for that version, so fixes in packages dry up too.
- The longer you wait, the bigger the eventual upgrade, because more breaking changes pile up.
Which version should you upgrade to?
Umbraco 17 LTS. It is supported until 27 November 2028, so an upgrade now buys you more than two years of patches. Choose a newer STS version only if you need one of its features and can upgrade again within a year.
Check the .NET runtime too
Each Umbraco version runs on a specific .NET version, and Microsoft supports those on its own schedule. Microsoft ends support for .NET 8 and .NET 9 on 10 November 2026 (33 days left). That affects Umbraco 13 and 14 (.NET 8) and Umbraco 15 and 16 (.NET 9). Umbraco 17 runs on .NET 10. Microsoft's .NET support policy
How this page stays current
Every status, countdown and answer on this page is calculated from a single data file each time the site is built, and the site rebuilds every day. The countdowns also update in your browser. The underlying dates are checked against Umbraco HQ's published policy; the last check was on 4 October 2026.
